Nailed playing ball hockey????
Been using custom masks playing ball hockey a few times a week for a couple years now. Been hit lots without much if any pain or discomfort.
Last night took a one time blast over my right eye, from a 6'-4" 240 pound guy who was about 15' away. Shifted my mask, actually over my left eye is where its sore, but I was actually dazed by the shot, as much as I hate to admit it, it hurt! My whole brain hurt like a bad brain freeze when eating ice cream too fast as a kid. My head also hurt from the impact as if the mask aborbed the shot and distributed the pain throughout top part of my head. Never felt anything like that before, been corked playing hockey as a defenseman from a bodycheck plenty, but it was different all together. I did not feel rigth after the game and at home last night, though I might of gotten a "conky" from ball hockey???
If that was a puck it would have been lights out, plus about 30 staples!
Be wise with these things

Re: Nailed playing ball hockey????
Sounds like a concussion. If you get hit exactly right, especially on or near the temple,it doesnt matter what kind of object(puck, ball)hits you or what mask you wear.If the uneasy feeling or headache lingers, see a doctor to have the severity assessed.Temple shots can kill if the cicumstances are right.I've been concussed by frozen tennis & hockey balls in the past so you're not alone. In total,I've had 9 diagnosed concussions & probably a couple dozen undiagnosed ones from hockey, street hockey,& floor hockey.Again,if it feels difficult to shake off get checked out.

Yeap - slight concussion - like tansuperman29 I've had about 7 of them. Check it out if it doesn't fade.

Re: Nailed playing ball hockey????
Echoing the Marcus Welby's among us...
Doctor, can I have a word?
The thing with ball hockey is, balls are very easy for the shooter to strike correctly (no puck wobble), and with composite sticks, they get going quickly.
Good luck, and over-hydrate for a few days.
Best,
ksl

Re: Nailed playing ball hockey????
I'm ok, no lingering affect. No it wont stop me from using them.
It was my custom Edwards mask and it was just one of those orange balls, not the hard hard hockey balls "the people who take ball hockey too serious leagues" use.
I've read somewhere that ball hockey shots have very high velocity after blade impact, they lose speed over distance, but because the ball compresses when hit, it explodes off the blade.
Picture tonight..

Re: Nailed playing ball hockey????
You can get a concussion without anything hitting your head*. Like they say it’s not the fall that kills you it’s the sudden stop. You take a puck to the middle of your forehead the injury site more than likely be at that point and their will be another at the back of your head. Your brain floats around (more or less) in your skull; as you recoil from the insult your brain contacts the inside of the skull causing the injury known as the concussion, the brain often also slams against the opposite side of the skull too, causing another injury at that point.
A form fitted mask really has little to do with protecting you from concussion; it does prevent/reduce bone fractures, tooth fractures, cuts, and to some extent pressure cuts, and hopefully keeps sticks and pucks off your eyes. A good form fitted mouth guard will help more for concussions and neck injury.
Jon
*If your accelerating body is stopped suddenly (like in a car accident, or a solid body check), your brain can continue to move and contact the skull, without ever hitting your head, you will be concussed.
--- "I'll be a story in your head, but that's OK. We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?
