Two goalie system

The past few weeks in the Toronto media all the talk has been about the strugglefor whoshould be the number 1 goalie to mind the leaf net.Tempest in a tea pot for people that have little historic knowledge.Looking back at the numbers of games shaired by Veznia winners from the lat 60's to the early 70's show that it was a solid way to get the best from your two tenders. It is only when you look at the 70's and the numbers Vachon Esposito ,Dryden ,Parent and Cheevers post that the 2 goalie system seems to lose it's appeal. But with more games more travel and more injuries,it may be time for a re-think.

One of Esposito's Vezina trophies was shared with Gary Smith. It was almost a two goalie system that season, but Espo did play about 2/3 of the games.

Re: Two goalie system

As a goalie, you always have to be focused. However, in the '70s and early '80s, the play was a lot more hap-hazard. Goalies were always on edge because surprises and breakaways were much more common - so the two goalie system helped take the heat off your number one goalie. Kenny Dryden and Bunny being the prime example (possible Habs bias).

Nowadays, the play is a lot more fluid, skaters are prepared for anything. So I think by chopping and changing goalies - they will lose any momentum they've built up. If your 'star' goalie needs a rest, sure, bring in a solid back-up. Yet, I think it's best to get your number one goalie in as many crucial games as possible and use your back-up when it's absolutely necessary.
