I've got to be honest, one of the reasons I keep coming back is to see what Radbear is going to say or do next. When I am having a crappy day I just pull up the thigh pad mask and it turns my day around!!! Thanks buddy!!

Re: PAINTED PRETZEL

Interesting thought about the Plante,
that they'd only be made out of resin -
I personally believe (even though I've never actually seen one) that the amount of resin used would make it brittle and that these masks would not have lasted -- there had to be some kind of fiberglass in there, and the resin itself is usually polyester, it isn't fiberglass by itself. I'm fairly sure that a good amount of fiberglass mat might appear to look transparent even though it would be in there to hold all the resin together.

As far as the smoothness goes, in a 2 part mold, there has to be some kind of residue or and quite possibly a mold / demold line.
The sheen might be achieved by cleaning a freshly demolded mask with a light steel wool pad.

About the method of making one, it's very interesting that all of Plante's joints in the Pretzels seem to be fairly flush, while many other Pretzel masks have large bumps where the bars intersect: Ex: Dunc Wilson.
Does this indicate two different methods of making these masks?

Personally, if I had to guess, those masks always looked to me like if they had been made out of metal, all welded together. An expert metal worker might have shaped a "positive" metal pretzel mask, fitted properly to the head cast, and then a 2 part mold could be taken from that point.

Outside of a metal positive mold, you could probably make a mock-up with pieces of rope, soaked in something like white glue, which would give you a "quickie" idea of what the mask could look like. And from this rope mock-up, take a 2 part mold which would then be used to make the actual mask.

I guess it would be possible to pour some resin from the top, as long as you have a 2nd hole on top of the mold so that the air could escape from the cavity. That would probably work and even be reasonably easy to demold, but with hardly any fiberglass in there, it would be extremely brittle. It would probably break into pieces if you just dropped it on a hard enough surface.

When I saw a Plante mask at the HHOF you could look right through it. around the eyes and mouth was different and that looked like there was some fiberglass in those areas. I know for sure there is just resin in some areas as you can see bubbles in the resin and it looks just like my leftover hardened resin.

Re: PAINTED PRETZEL

it would be interesting to see the back side of the mask. check the jacque plante pretzel post. take a real close look at the mask, not the forehead or nose part. To me it looks like fiberglass strands like mat fiberglass, or maybe just scuff marks.Question: how many different pretzel masks did plante have?

Now take a look at this plante pretzel, does this mask look like any of the other plante masks?

Re: PAINTED PRETZEL

I seem to think that there were alot of plante masks. this may be due to the fact the resin masks were that brittle.

Here is a pic I took at the hall

Re: PAINTED PRETZEL

Plante's mask in the b&w picture above looks like the first mask he wore after his very first mask. Probably starting in the winter of spring of 1960 and until he was traded to the Rangers.

The mask we see him wearing in the Rangers years is different - he must have had 3 different pretzel masks total, not counting backups, if any.
