Re: Interesting Email. Giacomin's First Mask Lefty Wilson

Arnie, we're skeptical because due to limited info on this subject, especially pertaining to the older masks, we tend to mostly go on our own assumptions: I find it hard to let go the notion that Gilles Villemure's mask and Ed Giacomin's first mask were not made by the same maker, at the same time.

My reason: last summer I contacted the NY Rangers organization about this, who got back to me saying that they got a hold of Gilles Villemure and this is what he would have told them:

Apparently, both he and Giacomin were molded by an outside company's representative, and approximately a month later they each received their mask in the mail.

So going on this info, from the NY Rangers organization, I have my reasons for believing that even though you just told us something else. Personally, I think I'll adopt your explanation, since it's apparent by now that retired goalie's memories pertaining to mask stuff is not always where we would like it to be.

But again, this is just a personal notion of mine. If you just cleared it all up for us, we just have to let go of our preconceived notions and accept the facts as they are.

Please contact me at [email protected] at your earliest convenience.

Mr. Giacomin's mask differs from the typical Lefty Wilson mask because he had a very pronounced nose that did not lend itself to the flat style of the normal Lefty mask. If you look closely at Mr. Giacomin's Ernie Higgins mask, It does not resemble any other Higgins mask except for the hole pattern. It is very unique in shape because of his nose.
This was the problem Lefty encountered when making his mask. That is why you don't see the usual flat shape of a Lefty mask.

Neil Higgins said the same thing regarding Giacomin -his mold was different than any other his father had done. That is why his Higgins is indeed so unique looking. This explanation makes sense.

Arnie
Thanks for the follow up, ya just never know sometimes especially with a group of goalie's.
I threw it out there cause it's not the usual Lefty style of mask.
Again, welcome aboard. It's a great site to bust balls and share info, but please don't post any shirtless pics of your self in the bathroom.
Thanks
Simo

Re: Interesting Email. Giacomin's First Mask Lefty Wilson

Mr. Giacomin's and Mr. Villemure's masks were absolutley NOT made by the same mask maker. Please look at these masks closley. Both differ in color, shape, thickness and craftmanship. Giacomin's mask is very dark in color, like raw fiberglass. Just like Sawchuk's. The cutouts are very crude, as were Lefty's masks. It is also thicker than Villemure's mask. Something that was requested of Lefty by Giacomin.
Villemure's mask is painted a cream color. The cutouts are very symetrical and it is thinner than Giacomin's.
If they were made at the same time, by the same mask maker, why would they differ so drastically? Why paint one and not the other?
Like I said, I am not here to throw around falsehoods. I thought my experience and friendship with Lefty would be of interest to this board. You ask me to clear this up. I don't know how else I can do this but to offer you my personal experience on the subject. If you choose not to believe me, so be it.

Well, there's always someone somewhere who has the facts. Since the Rangers related to me what Gilles Villemure had told them, that's all I had to go on.

Also, in his book, Mr. Villemure mentions that he started wearing his mask in 1966 - is this date right according to your knowledge?

And, as I mentionned, about the 2 masks being made at the same time, this was only information that I got from the Rangers organization, according to Gilles Villemure. I agree that the masks look drastically different. But when we go on speculations, that can always be that one mask was a rush job, while the other was not.

In any case, I am extremely grateful for the information you provided. Is there anything else you could tell use about Vernon Michaels? Did he by chance make masks for Cam Newton or Jim Rutherford - even if they were only practice masks?

That sounds about right, but I cannot confirm.
Vernon Michaels did not make masks for Cam Newton and Jim Rutherford.

Thank you.

Now I'm going off topic, but I'd like to find out about 2 masks you might have some information about:

Bernie Parent's "ghost" mask - the white mask he wore after the pretzel mask with the Flyers and Gary Bauman's mask in Minnesota:

Both these masks have 3 vertical cutouts on the forehead, and vertical mouths.

My guess on those is that Bill Burchmore might have made them, based on the similarity of Jacques Plante's 1959 mask with the vertical mouth. Please share your thoughts ...

From what I remember, Bill Burchmore did indeed make Gary Bauman's mask, but I think it was Tom Lawson who made Parent's mask. If it is the mask you are talking about. I am not sure what the ghost mask is, but if you are refering to the mask he wore when he changed from the pretzel mask (also a Burchmore), then yes, it was Lawson.

So it was Burchmore and not Weatherbee who made Parents pretzel mask. What about dunc wilson and Doug Favell's pretzel masks?
I think parent's first pretzel mask was made by Burchmore since it was very similar to the one J.Plante wore. The second pretzel mask the bars seem thicker(rounder) weatherbee like....yes/no ?

Concerning Parent's "ghostmask" - that was the one I was referring to. emoticon

Very interesting information. Has anyone ever compiled a list of all goalies who wore masks from 1959 on, including a note for who made their masks and the date of fabrication?
