Dan Blackburn
Given this site's passion for old school 'keepers, what's the latest with Blackburn? When I left the NYC area, last I heard he was playing with some Bill Durnan-type gloves and trying to make a go of it. Poor SOB busted his ass for the NYR as a rookie and ...*POOF* ...

Re: Dan Blackburn
I think that he was forced into retirement because of the injury, but I can't confirm this for sure.

Re: Dan Blackburn
He is still playing, although both he and the New York Rangers have given up on any aspirations of an NHL comeback. They mutually decided that playing with two"blockers" style gloves was not going to cut it in the new NHL. Too bad as he was a pretty decent goalie.

Re: Dan Blackburn
I think I have one and an article on the "struggles that he went through to learn to play this way. I look for it, although it may take awhile (everything packed in boxes) but if I find it I will post it for sure.

Re: Dan Blackburn
He played in the ECHL in 2005 for the Victoria
Samon Kings played pretty well. The Rangers severed ties to Blackburn due to his injury. last I had herd was he was playing for a SR AAA team in BC. I guess that the injury keeps him from making a upward motion with the glove hand
so they went with a blocker with a small trapper to help him smother the puck ...

Re: Dan Blackburn
wow.. I remember Blackburn playing for the Rangers a few years ago..
but wasnt aware he suffered a serious injury to the point he had to change glove styles.
thats pretty incredible he can play using 2 blockers.
amazing.

Re: Dan Blackburn
was the second blocker have a modified palm in any way or was it just a lefty blocker? I remember up in NY reading that Blackburn was at training camp and trying to make a go of it with a Bill Durnan -esque glove. I thought how awesome would it be if a modern goalie was able to alternate the stick between shooters!
DIdnt Blackburn get his injury while lifting weights fo ra national team? I hope he got some kind of insurance or settlement.

Re: Dan Blackburn
Yes his second"blocker" was eventually modified to include a mini-style "trapper" in the palm area, but he first started this experiment with a regular blocker. He actually first injuried his shoulder area while playing junior hockey, but at the time it was no major concern. He further aggrivated the injury by lifting weights and it eventually lead to his missing a full season with the Rangers and ultimately to the current situation of retirement and at best recreational or men's league hockey. Too bad, as I watched and scouted him as a junior and he had all the tools to be a very good number one goaltender for any team that wanted to draft him, which was eventually the Rangers.
