BERNIE! BERNIE! BERNIE!

From the book BERNIE! BERNIE! BERNIE!

Until I got to Rosemont I had never worn a face mask and my dental bill showed it. I had lost more than a few teeth on the ice. I quickley joined what was then a relatively new group of mask-wearers after getting hit over the right eye with a puck.

The brawl in New York:

About five minutes remained in the game when a brawl started. Vic Hadfield and Jim Harrison were fighting near me, and I guess Hadfield was getting the better of it, so I took off my mask and tried to break them up. When things settled down, Hadfield picked up my mask and threw it into the stands.
New York fans thought what Hadfield did was pretty funny. Whoever caught my mask refused to return it. I guess Hadfield thought what he did was hilarious, too, even though the damn mask cost a couple hundred dollars.

Haha, I wonder how he would have felt if he knew then what the mask would be worth in 2007!

GOING TO TORONTO:

Jacques Plante came over and grabbed my [sign in to see URL]!!, Plante was like God to me. He was my idol. I had been watching him on tv since I was a kid. Now I was on the same team with him. It was then i knew that even though I still felt hurt over the Philadelphia trade, this trade was going to be the best thing that ever happened to me in hockey.

With Plante around to teach me, it would be like having some gold from a mountain and polishing it. I was the gold, Plante was the polisher..........

FAN MAIL

Dear Bernie
I have been watching your games when you play.
I don't know which team you are on.
But last year I knew what team you were on.
 Y ou were on Toronto.
And when ever I saw you it looked like you were wearing Jacques Plante's mask with that back thing to protect the back of your head.
What is that thing that is on the back of the mask?
  Yor Friend
p.s. Send me your picture

Dear Friend
Do you want a picture of the thing on the back of mask or one of me?

Dear Bernie
I love to watch you play goal for the Maple Leafs.
Could you please get me an autographed picture of Jacques Plante? I'd appreciate it.

Dear Fan,
Funny you should ask. My most prized possession is an autographed picture of Jacques Plante. I really hate to part with it. But as a compromise, would you settle for an unautographed picture of Bernie Parent? emoticon

This was the best book ever. He and Cheevers wrote similar-style books 4-5 years apart, and they're great. Bernie's was better, because he taught you about goaltending within the narrative, and still told a great story. I learned a bunch from that book when it was new, and I was young...(sigh)
Great quotes, throughout that book.
Thanx 'n cheers, BP30.
