Why Do Leather Pads turn Black?

Ever notice the faces of some leather pads turn almost shiny black in spots after time and use? What causes this? and is there a way to remove this and get the brown look back in the leather that is still plenty thick?

The only thing I can think of is A Ice is dirty over time. Or B Ice is burning the leather like frost bite type of burn?

Re: Why Do Leather Pads turn Black?

Its funny you mention this cause I used to get this on my lefebrves when I was in highschool. They where originally white but, we used to practice in a place called clove lakes memorial rink, It was a goverment run"park" where all the staten island ny highschools practiced. It was a sand bottom rink where the lines were actualy metal bars under the ice (except the crease). The ice was so badly kept that people literally tripped over the blue line. Well long story short on my white pads I used to get a brownish/black color on the inside of the knee and the inner leg rolls, it actually stained them so bad that I would dye my pads every two weeks or so. I have never had this problem on anyother rink so I expect that its a combination of bad ice/non-pure water (for the zamboni) and what ever you use to seal your pads. Mine where deer hair and full leather except for the leg guards so I use Butchers wax. Great for water proofing and sliding but seams to pick up dirt alot
