Re: 1st Shot - something different

One more update. A quickie cell phone pic right after we got the paint on. It had literally just finished cooling after being baked and we were running out the door to a game to test it out. Ahh, coulda, woulda, shoulda... It's going to take a little getting used to, and the pads need some adjustment.

It still needs a wetsand and polish, plus the final graphics need to be airbrushed, but you get the idea.

I guess this is the first shot I've posted of the back plate. It's tough to see because of the resolution and the fact that it's black, but the backplate has two layers so the straps can run through the middle.

Yeah, I dunno about the all black. You know what we say in the car hobby about black:

"It's not a colour, it's a hobby"

That and my teammates were joking about getting me a cape, changing everyone's name to Luke, and playing the Darth Vader theme song everytime I got on the ice.... <BSEG>

The backplate sort of came about by accident. We cast the rear gel pad too deep into the mold. Again, it's a coulda, woulda, shoulda kind of thing. It's really too heavy because it's all fiberglass.

Hindsight being 20/20, it might be made to work if we'd done it as a combination of fiberglass and kevlar like the mask. If I was to do it again I'd also spend more time working the wax to get just the right thickness all the way through to pass the straps with a smaller margin for error. IE it doesn't need to be as thick as we did it.

you have to do it ,and get a light saber which came out in the shape of a stick. That might be a bit hard to source though, even in a galaxy far far away

Looks good, I showed the pics to my gf and her dad who were in the room, and the gf's dad said "looks thick and heavy", which I would agree with, but it must be a TANK.

Really neat looking thing. What kind of glass did you use, was it the same throughout?

I don't know the technical terms for the types of glass we used, but it was actually 3 kinds, all woven. The Kevlar is tough stuff! It took two of us just to cut it.

We started out by filling in the contours/edges between my "face" and the reliefs we built in for the Gel pads. Then it was a finer weave on the inner sheet because of the complex shapes on the plug, then a heavier weave, then two layers of Kevlar, then a heavier layer and finish with another of the fine.

Lots of coulda, woulda, shoulda. It's actually not that heavy. We could have made it a bit lighter if we hadn't built up the area between the reliefs on the top of the head. "Woulda" had better airflow up there too. I'm trying to avoid making cuts on the top of the mask because of the graphics.

Nice mask. I like the fact you made the mask your own design.

How does it fit? The way your holding the mask up kinda looks like the bottom straps were placed too far back, not giving a tight enough fit towards the mouth area of the mask....I could be wrong,

Again, great job...

Oh, it fits fine. I was just striking a goofy pose. Sort of a "thinking man's" goalie....
