Re: Darren Pang

Aramid/kevlar is a stronger fiber than glass. Using it in place of glass means less glass, whether it be one layer or all layers so therefore less weight.

That being said, I don't think I'll ever use more than 2 layers of aramid in anything. It's a pain to cut and sand, to work with in general.

Re: Darren Pang

When Harrison made my combo he was using strips of Kevlar in the "high impact areas", the jaw and forehead.

Re: Darren Pang

Hi Everyone you can get a sheet of fiberglass cloth and of sheet of kevlar both with equal weights (oz). The difference is in the amount of layers that you would need to apply using fiberglass as opposed to kevlar to get the same amount of strength.

For instance and this is just hypothetically speaking, if you make a mask say with 13 layers of 9 oz. fiberglass cloth. You should be able to get the same strength ratio by using say 6 layers of 9 oz. cloth of kevlar, because kevlar is supposed to be 2 to 3 times stronger than fiberglass.

The difference in the number of layers that you save by using kevlar is where you get the weight differential and a lighter mask. At least this is my interpretation from what I've read.

I don't see how, a sheet of Kevlar weighs the same as a sheet of fiberglass. I picked up an all Kevlar army helmet last week and it was quite heavy.

================================

Yeah, those Kevlar Army helmets were heavy compared to the original metal brain buckets initially issued.
