Re: RobHolland?EdMio-First Combos?
Thanks for all the input guys! Still looking for that Rob Holland photo----I remember a black and white shot in an old Hockey Illustrated, or Sporting News Annual, but cant seem to find it anywhere.
Back to Drydens original combo-----did they actually make its own unique shell,or cannobolize an existing mask? And where did his original set of bars come from? Dont tell me he also welded up his own cage too?
Hands down had to be the most economical goalie ever!

Dryden's original combo
The shell was made from scratch as a project by Dave and Greg Harrison. The cage too was built from scratch.

Re: RobHolland?EdMio-First Combos?
Thanks man.after I posted last nite, I went to bed thinking maybe the original cage was maybe an old Safe-T-Gaurd model---an off beat earlier version of the cat-eye, or HM30.

Early combo cages
My early combos used a cut down HM30 for the cage. That may also be what other makers used for their early designs.

Re: RobHolland?EdMio-First Combos?
Gary has a photo in his Maskmakers section of my first combo that I made and wore in 1981-83. (the picture were a red head girl is wearing it) The mask was small, only to the middle of my ears, and I used an old Safe-T-Guard cage that I wore in high school with a Stan Mikita helmet. At the time I was making it, I was wearing an HM30 with a Jofo 245 helmet. I used the old Safe-T-Guard becouse I didn't want to cut up my nice HM30, but after I finished the mask, I never wore a helmet again. The Saf-T-Guard had better sight lines than the HM30, but I never used one on another mask. After that first mask, I allways cut down an HM30 or an HM40.

Re: RobHolland?EdMio-First Combos?
Gary used a cut down HM30 cage on the combo he built for me. I had to replace the cage after taking a nasty shot that bent the bars. Lucky for me I had a spare. I now troll e-bay looking for HM30's to keep as spares for the mask. Gary's combo has been my workhourse mask for league games since it was made.

Re: RobHolland?EdMio-First Combos?
Here are 2 early combos. The first is Gary Inness & the 2nd is Rob Holland. Both are from the 1979-80 season.

Re: RobHolland?EdMio-First Combos?
Yes, that is the mask Holland was using in 1986 with the Milwaukee Admirals. It was an old Greg Harrison mask. He asked me to make him a replacement mask the year before when he was playing for the Indianapolis Checkers, but I had to say no becouse I knew the financial position of the team and figured I would not get payed. I made him his mask the next season.
