New gear that looks vintage
I have been using pads and gloves by Pete Smith for over a year that were made to look vintage - brown with some limited black. The blocker even has the holes like the old Cooper model, but still the stuff looks too much like new style gear. My question for discussion is this: "Is there a gear maker out there that would take the look of old style pads and gloves (like the GM21) and add some modern day features for safety and still keep the stuff light weight"?
Thoughts? Anyone else have the same interest in this type of gear? Gloves and pads are the only thing that could be done retro, chest and arm unit have gotten way too big! Then there are the sticks... Anyway, fire up the discussion!

Re: New gear that looks vintage
I recently picked up a brand new, Brian's "heritage" Air Hook Trapper. The kid had it in his shed for a couple of years and never used it, it still had tags attached
Now I am looking for a Brian's "Heritage' blocker. Because Brian's did the whole chapter 11 thing, they are not doing that line any longer.
Has anyone seen one in a shop recently or know anyone looking to sell one?

Re: New gear that looks vintage
I've got a set of custom made Battram gear made to look vintage. I've had this set a few years and they are great. I love the old look with the modern day protection and light weight. I get a lot of comments on it. Especially when I wear fiberglass. :)

Yes, I love this stuff! I think it should be mandatory, and all these rainbow colored goalie pads should be outlawed. That will never happen, but maybe Gary Bettman can set one night a year aside and call it vintage night for the entire league.

Re: New gear that looks vintage
I ask this, Is there a gear manufacturer that would make EXACT authentic replica stuff out of leather, I personally would buy some Bourdon or Kennesky Pads and/or a new GM12 and or GM21 trapper made of leather. If they were EXACT.

Re: New gear that looks vintage
Thats a cool idea! Replica pads to go with the replica masks. Most of the Kennesky and Bourdon pads are so beat up from being so old that they're practically falling apart(which I know gives them character). But wouldn't it be cool to see what these pads looked like when they were BRAND NEW! They make retro jerseys- why not retro goalie pads. I think the biggest stumbling block might be the getting the copyrights to those old companies. But, whats his name got the rights to Fibrosport, so why not Kennesky and Bourdon. I'm sure Pop would be proud to see an attempt to replicate his pads if he were here today. I would order a pair of Kennesky's TODAY.

Re: New gear that looks vintage
I like the vintage night idea. MLB has futuristic games occasionally in Seattle, and military games in San Diego, so why not!!!
As for the exact replica pads, they would weigh a ton vs what we use today. I remember when I was in high school in the late 80's, everyone wanted white or colored pads because they hated the look of the brown equipment. Same with everyone buying the black or gray cowling goalie skates. Now everyone likes that vintage look. I have seen guys play recently with really old gear, it just doesn't hold up well and isn't very safe. They have all kinds of jimmied modifications to fill in the unprotected spots. If you can get a manufacturer like Vaughn, Eagle or Bauer to make vintage looking gear, but out of lightweight material, like the discontinued Brian's heritage gear, that would be the way to go. You would get a classic look with high performance & safety.

Re: New gear that looks vintage
The only makers of the "good" old pads left are John Brown, Mike Vaughn, and Glenn Miller. Glenn is the only one who MIGHT make his old pads. I think Mike has got too big to want to do something like that, and I know John won't. I tried to get him to repair a JB15 catch glove and the only response I got was "it has been discontinued". I still have my Miller 1000's that he custom made for me in 1986 and they are in remarkably good condition.
