THE PLANTE & TRETIAK Conspiracy...

FROM THE "WHO MADE THIS MANIAGO MASK" post in the "VINTAGE MASKS" section:

It's funny i read this about Plante as well, however i never understood why he (Plante) sat down with Tretiak before the summit series and discussed with him how all the NHL stars shot. My theory is that Plante like everyone else assumed that the NHLers would destroy the Russians and a little goaltending coaching wouldn't make much difference.

In this issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRE Sept. 4-10 1972,

The Headline reads "PLANTE CRIE A L'INJUSTICE".

The articles inside include a few pics of the Fibrosport shop in Magog, and a brief article on how their masks were made.

The other article is about how Jacques Plante felt so wronged about not being included in the TEAM Canada vs. the Soviet Red Army Team series in September 1972, in any capacity.

I'd throw a guess that he went and educated Tretiak on how to play the NHL's top shooters to get back at the organization that had blackballed him.

Now I'll have to find Tretiak and ask him to confirm this...

Yes i have this magazine Team Canada should have taken Plante especially when one considers that Ed Johnston was chosen as the replacement for Gerry Cheevers.
Other considerations; Ed Giacomin, Rogie Vachon

emoticon According to Ken Dryden, Ed Giacomin would have been chosen, but a knee injury ended that idea. Why Rogie wasn't chosen baffles the hell out of me. I guess Rogie till this day, gets no respect as the HOF continues to snub him.

We have to keep in mind that the chosen players were those who came off a good 1971-72 season.

Honestly, Cheevers should have been chosen, but he was snubbed along with Hull and Parent who had skipped to the WHA.

Head Coach Sinden = Ed Johnston as #3.

This is only one of the stories out there that make me believe that Jacques Plante was certainly MORE than capable of being a turd.

So he got his ego bruised so he went and smartened up Tretiak. Good lord, what a thing to do.

It seems that there are a significant number of Plante's peers that were less than impressed by the way the guy carried and conducted himself...

I think that the only to have a chance to understand Plante is to see him as a "free thinker".

First he didn't want to wear a fiberglass mask, then he became the mask's most fervent ambassador. He even started a mask company.

As far as the Tretiak/Soviets treachery, my guess is that like all great competitors, he felt absolutely no loyalty to any entity that did not include him. i.e.: He was not included in Team Canada, so he didn't feel any loyalty to them. He might have been a great asset to the team had he been included in some capacity.

And possibly, he might have been the cornerstone to the tremendous rivalry and excitement that ensued - who knows if it might have been a dull and one-sided series if he hadn't gone to Tretiak to educate him...

This past week, on the Legends of Hockey, Tretiak was interviewed. He said that Plante came to him in the locker room, and told him how to play the Team Canada snipers. There you go. I was really surprised when I heard it. After all Plante was from Quebec, not Canada... emoticon

That's an interesting comment too, Plante was a French-Canadian in an Anglo-dominated context. I definitely see him as someone who might have wanted to show that he had something that might upset the "system".

Excellent post, TM.

Re: THE PLANTE & TRETIAK Conspiracy...

emoticon The late Jacques Plante can easily be considered the father of modern day goaltending. One of the all-time greats for sure. However, he also had an ego as big as the solar system and a chip on his shoulder. His best days were behind him for sure at the point of the summit series, and there were better and younger goalies to choose from. How come a 42 year old Gump Worsley did not complain about not being chosen? He had just come off a stellar season with the Northstars, owning a 2.12 GAA and playing on the western division all star team. Gump was a humble man, who need not petition for the spotlight. Plante, on the other hand, felt the NHL had to owe him something. No matter how you slice it, Jacques Plante, stabbed Canada in the back, and as far as I am concerned that one action on his part to help the Soviet Union gain any kind of advantage was nothing short of athletic treason. Jacques Plante did not settle in Canada after his playing days, he lived out the rest of his life in a semi-reclusive lifestyle in Switzerland.

I'm going to chime in here in Plante's defense. Not just because he was my hero but because there was a time when i studied law and i teach Law at the high school level. And i feel that Mr. Plante(although rather dead)seems to need some defence

Plante was like everyone else, in that he probably felt that the Russians were going to get embarrassed by the Canadians so he (probably)thought that he could reduce the humilation of the young Tretiak by offerinig him (Tretiak) some pointers on the NHL shooters.
I doubt (or maybe i don't want to believe) that Plante was being vendictive towards Team Canada rather he was simply being benevolent towards a "lodge bother"; a young inexperienced goalie that was about to face some of the best players in the world at the time.
For Plante (in his own mind) he probably thought his advice would only mean that Canada would win a game 5 to 2 instead of 7 to 2
