Re: THE PLANTE & TRETIAK Conspiracy...

emoticon Gary, If old Jacques was chosen to goal for team Canada, do you think he would have said two words to Tretiak? I rest my case.

Good point, however, despite his ego, i'm sure he was realistic enough that he knew he would never be considered for team Canadan (unless he was totally delusional). When he played for the Leafs he chose what games he would start and often left games in the middle to have Gamble finish up (i have at least three games on tape where he does this).
Interesting topic; I actually have the magazine pictured above and i should get my wife to translate (my French is poor) it all so that we can gather more information.
Maybe he was simply trying to make some inroads into the Soviet market for Fibrosport. We do know that Jacques liked his $$$$.

Re: THE PLANTE & TRETIAK Conspiracy...

OH YES -
at the end of his book "DEVANT LE FILET" (sorry I don't know the title in English)
There's a picture of him and Tretiak holding a Senior Fibro model. This is all very interesting, it never really occured to me that he might be representing FIBROSPORT to Europe and the east, the USSR specifically.

In any case, I have often heard that he was the miserly type, so it never surprises me that he would quite the opportunist as well.
But I insist that if one is to understand the man, you must accept him as a completely "FREE THINKER", and I strongly disagree that he only wanted to help a young Russian Goalie against some of the best shooters in the world.

Those who know the story of that series know that on the TEAM CANADA side, there was only the slightest consensus on anything going into the series. On the other side, the RED ARMY Team was an extremely well-oiled hockey machine, despite the fact that the Canadian scouts never came close to picking up on that.

THE "SPORTS ILLUSTRE" article is there for anyone to read (in french, unfortunately) and to me, clearly it tells the whole story of why Plante did what he did. He probably only wanted to be included in a coaching capacity, and when that didn't happen, he felt excluded enough to turn on the Bobby Orr/Alan Eagleson/Harry Sinden/John Ferguson group, who were all anglophones anyway.

Possibly he was smart enough to already have figured out what Eagleson was up to (as everyone later found out) and he wanted to kick him and his organization right in the n*ts...on the other hand, if they had told him in advance that he wasn't going to see a thin dime from his participation, he wouldn't have bothered or even cared.

I find it very interesting that Maskman had the hindsight to include the timing of Plante's Fibrosport situation into this thread. Maybe he was really preparing his new career after hockey, - he went on to coach the Nordiques (disastrously) in 1973-74 - he probably felt that he needed to showcase himself in a coaching capacity somehow since he knew his playing days were close to over at his age. If Team Canada took away that desperately important opportunity...who knows what he might have been willing to do in retaliation?

And yes...it bugs everyone that their idols were not "perfect"...

 emoticon
Hmmm...this is the first time I read such a comment...Plante was the color commentator for th 72 series for radio Canada...spoke highly of Tretiak,Dryden & Esposito as I recall...
Plante played againts the Russians with the Montreal Jr.s when he retired from New York...and he played an amazing game! They say at one point he lost his catching glove and caught the puck with his hand!
What I remember about Plante, was that he simply loved to teach the art of goaltending to anyone who was ready to listen...
The 72 Russian team was highly influenced by the Habs of the 50's & 60's...thus,it could be that Tretiak's idol was Plante and possibly just asked him for some pointers (I know I would have)...and Plante simply gave him some guidelines...
I said this before, but I always thought Tretiak had a style like Plante with the Hab's of the 50's...
Plante's book,''Goaltending'' was my bible when I played goal...hell,it was the bible for all the goalies I knew!
Just my take.

Re: THE PLANTE & TRETIAK Conspiracy...

This is of the most interesting threads I have read on this forum. Plante was my idol and for a time I was considered the largest collector of Plante items in North America. Yet I am not so foolish and idol struck as not to recognize both his good and not so good points. He was a true iconoclast and it would be foolhardy for us to delve into the mind of a very complicated man.

I do not know if anyone here saw the thread with a copy of the letter that Jacques had sent to me. A busy man - within a weeks time he answered the questions of a young goaltender who wanted his advice. I have always felt that concerning Tretiak he was giving pointers to a young goalie about to face a difficult situation. Yes other factors might have lead to him even talking to Tretiak but it is too easy to over complicate the scenerio.
