Indoor gear and outdoor gear

I have a pretty good set of old gear. GM 21 trapper, CCM blocker, Cooper arm and belly pads, Cooper pants, and John Brown leg pads.

I have this set for use at outdoor rinks. I save my good set for indoor ice.

I am planning to do up a new "OLD STYLE" mask for myself at some point. Until then I use a Cooper helmet matched to an old style JOFA cage.

In an effort to save my feet, I use a newer pair of skates at the outdoor rinks.

Re: wearing your old gear

I live in suburban Detroit, moved here 5 years ago, but never played-----save for 4 games on return trips to my hometown(my best buddy still thrives in their local mens leagues)I recently met a local guy here in Detroit, who contracted me to make him a mask----hes in his early 20's.Anyway----he called me 3 weeks ago because he plays for 2 different teams, and his schedule conflicted----he needed a sub.I showed up in a rink I've never seen, and played goal for a bunch of guys ranging from 20 to 47.I wore all my best stuff---the things I counted on most----John Brown leg pads, and blocker, cooper GM 21 catch glove.old Vaughn 1000 chest and arm pads, and suited up.I saw alot of quizzical looks from my "teammates",but they were happy to have a goalie, and seem resigned to spending their whole game back-checking, and playing it close to the vest.
I found out after the game that we were playing the top team in the league, and expected to lose , though we were a middle of the pack team.
We won 5-3, and the team asked me back for the playoffs, and contacted me again to play this season. The refs both did a closeup inspection prior to the game, and actually came in the lockeroom afterward to see where I came from. As a potbelly, smoker, they could see I was spent, and congratulated me when they realized I wasnt some old minor pro player brought in as a ringer.
The pads were a hit, and NO ONE could understand how I could play standup, and wear such antique,HEAVY equipment.
I played 4 more games for my friends other team while he was waiting for new equipment. They are the absolute worst skaters, and have no idea how to play positional hockey.I lost them all by scores of 9-1, 7-2,8-o, and 12-1.I resigned myself to not allowing first shot or tap-in goals.Out of all the tallys, just two beat me clean----the rest were 3rd, or more chances, and NO Breakaways---and I saw LOTS!
The refs in my last game were actually helping me up after goals, asking me why I was killing myself for such a bad team.I got a few breaks on covering pucks, otherwise I was on my own.Kinda cool----I could have been in better shape, and never knew any of the players before hand, but I felt at least competant for such a dismal team.
I found out after the last game, that the same bunch of guys had lost to these teams 16-1, 18-0, 22-2 etc......in the previous season. To them , they felt they improved, and they were happy. The old classic stuff was scary for all at first, but now Im recognizable with REAL leather colored stuff, pretty cool!
PS Just turned 43!

Re: wearing your old gear

emoticon Boys, While I wear modern skates {I have very wide feet and my leather tacks have crushed toes ]I have been buying vintage gear for a year or so now, and have decided to go out the way I came in. I am wearing a nice set of Vaughn leather pads, and GM 12 blocker and a Vaughn T-900 that I bought from Groinpull. I opened up the T-900 and added an additional layer of padding from a GM-9 that was trashed, and now no more stingers. I have given up on the fibrosport I wore growing up, and wear one of the five masks I have built for myself since finding this spectacular site. My pants are modern, and my chest arm is miller C-6, which are made for the smaller retro look. I will hit the big five o this fall, and for me it is old school or no school.
