Long Island's mask maker, Gary Hanson
Cool paint work, I like it.
I've had these pictures for a few years now, a member here sent them to me when I put a shout out for Gary.
I figured I'd share these with you guys because we all dig this stuff.
I shared the net with Gary in 1973 at the Long Island Arena, Commack NY:

Re: Long Island's mask maker, Gary Hanson
Did Hanson also paint these masks?
all these paint jobs are very cool, looks like they were painted by the same individual.
all these jobs are simple and look great from a distance...the way combos should look.
good stuff!
thanks for posting!

Re: Long Island's mask maker, Gary Hanson
I remember Gary Hanson masks in the late 80's.
In these photos the top mask on the left was Ron Hextalls mask in Philly. I remember Hextall taped over this design and spray it white when he got traded to Quebec.Shortly after he switched to the Itech 961 with the polar bear design. The mask to the right belonged to a goalie in the Islander organization by the name of George Maneluk (s.p). I think he played a few games with the Islanders but for the most part played in the AHL with Capital District.Just below his mask where you see the blue and orange themed mask that belonged to another goalie who played with Capital district by the name of Paul Cohen. I saw highlights of these goalies wearing these masks back in the late 80's. Hextall while wearing it in Philly and in Quebec. Maneluk's and Cohen's masks on a show called Rinkside. It was a show on TSN that featured news from the AHL for that week.
Regarding the paint work yes Gary did paint his own masks. He was but a few who made and painted his own masks.
The rest of the masks in these photos were made for local goalies who played Rec leagues. From what I was told Gary's masks were solid and very strong. At that time his cages were a cut down HM30 but I remember hearing that he was switching over to a custom stainless steel cage.
Thank you for posting these photos it brings back some great memories

Re: Long Island's mask maker, Gary Hanson
WOW, great memory.
You had the spelling correctly and everything.
The mask under Hextall's is Bruce Hoffort w/ KC Blades of the AHL and Flyers.
Gary does not make masks anymore but I did read about some head gear he's making for women's field hockey.
another Hanson combo:

Re: Long Island's mask maker, Gary Hanson
Love the artwork that Gary use to do on his masks. Simple and clean. Looking at these pics you see one that resembled Bill Ranford's first Oiler mask. Another design that was similar to Allan Bester's Toronto mask. I like the one thats an offshoot of Belfour's Chicago mask with the feathers down the side. Hoffort's design kind of resembled Hesxtalls 2nd Harrison mask while in Philly but with a twist by adding the wings on the side along with the silver colour scheme.
These designs were all simple but they all worked. I'm a big fan of the simple artwork, not like some of the stuff you see today!
