Re: SAVE! hockey's Brave Goalies
Bernie with The Leafs.
Plante's influence rubbed off on Parent immediately. Bernie quickly adopted the Plante face mask an improved model developed by the goalie who had introduced the first one to modern hockey twelve years ago.
Plante's masks are custom made and Bernie did not have a spare. A plea was made to the crowd to return the mask. Plante replaced Bernie for the rest of the game.
After the game, Plante issued an SOSto his mask company in Mgog, Quebec where Parent's mold was on file.The workers went into over time to manufacture a new one.

Re: SAVE! hockey's Brave Goalies
Jacques Plante with The Leafs;
Wearing a new mask which he built himself, Plante led the league with a 1.88 G.A.A.. He launched his own mask company, selling copies of his fiberglass creation to goalers throught out North America. It's a beauty, said Plante displaying his masterpiece. I spent all summer with my arms in plaster of paris up to the elbows. Most days I worked from 8:00 a.m until midnight.. But when my mask was finished I had a great sense of acommplishment. It was worth all the hard work. This was ther first time I had a hand in making the mask. I just designed and tested the others.

Re: SAVE! hockey's Brave Goalies
Gerry Cheevers
Ever since losing a few teeth to Bereson's backhander in Rochester a couple of years earlier, Cheevers had been experimemting with masks. He had been unhappy with the ones he tried because he could'nt find one that held firm to his chin and that did not slip impairing his vision. Then Ernie Higgins an x plumber who lives in a Boston suburb developed a mask that held. Higgins masks are custom made affairs that require a special mold of his face. He slips a stocking over his subjects hair an then covers the face with vaseline and plaster of paris.
The thing that impressed Cheevers about the higgins mask was the chin strap, which eliminated the slipping and sliding of the mask
