See if he can remember the team he faced the first time he dawned the stitches... If his response is Oakland or Philadelphia or Toronto then we have our date (I am pretty sure he wont remember the date , but a visual like team name may be enough...)
This is the approach I would take. Give him the other known details - the game against Oakland was Saturday and the B's won 2-1 and so on. The clubs generally had a practice routine in place - light morning skate the day of the game, heavy practice the day before, etc. - this stuff he probably remembers because it was an ongoing thing. This season was the first year Cheevers was up to stay.
Put on the spot I can't remember things that well, but if I mull about something over a few days it sometimes comes back. If he can't recall right away, you might get him thinking about it and it may come back later on if you plant some of the facts around it into his mind.

Very nice detective work B{$
I love this stuff.
When did you figure the game in your new pic was played? It must have been Jan 4/68 because the only other road game for the Bruins against the Flyers that year was on Mar 7/68 at Maple Leaf Gardens because of the Spectrum roof thing. It tells us he wore the 2 slot until at least that January game.
With regards to the photo vs the Flyers, I think your right about it being the Jan. 4/68 game.
As well, it looks like he wore the 2 slot right to the end of the season (playoff photo below), then switched to his classic Higgens the following season:

Re: Gerry Cheevers first game with stitched mask
hey hey hey
I haven't said my last word.
But I would rather have both Louch55 & HelmutHedd30 as allies rather than opponents.
I Know HH30 is a very talented detective in his own right but now Louch55 comes onto the scene and when he closes the file on this one I'll be handing these two ALL of my COLD CASE FILES!!!!

Re: Gerry Cheevers first game with stitched mask
Here is an image from a newspaper for the Nov.12/67 game at home vs the Flyers...unfortunately Cheevers head is turned the wrong way.

Re: Gerry Cheevers first game with stitched mask
I have an archive game of Boston VS. Toronto from October 1968 and by that time Cheevers is wearing his first Ernie Higgins mask, so I doubt he would have reverted to wearing a Lefty Wilson mask. We might assume he got the first Higgins in the off-season (Summer 1968) so by that time the Lefty masks were a likely thing of the past for Cheevers.
The other goalie is Bower (no mask) and apparently this game was Bower's last career shutout.

Re: Gerry Cheevers first game with stitched mask
Yeah well - you cut-rate gumshoes can pack it up. I just got off the phone and concluded the Villemure mask investigation.
And I talked to the guy who made it in his basement in Winnipeg for $50 ...!!!
I'll post details later, much later ...
eat your hearts out ...

Re: Gerry Cheevers first game with stitched mask
Hey - Now that the Villemure case has been cracked open, the Cheevers case can be investigated more...
$200 a day plus expenses...
