As we all know and realize that art, fossils, paintings, things of historic events and rare sports collectables are only worth what someone is willing to pay. But asking that the shrine to Jim Craig be kept together should not have been mentioned in the description and listing of the items that I happen to read recently. That should have been kept quiet and left to be discussed with the potential buyers in confidence. "That's just my opinion" I agree that a museum tour would be one of the best scenario's like the mask in MOMA display. Maybe a private or corporate buyer that would allow it to go on tour for half or 6 months of the year and shown the rest of the time in his or her collection. Don't forget that museums do buy, sell and loan out parts of there collections to other museums. Don't kid yourself they do.            M{* J{*  J{* nondisclosed_email@example.com (Guardian 1)Fri, 14 Aug 2015 11:20:34 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275896,from=rss#post275896https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275896,from=rss#post275896Definitely time sensitive. If sold even ten years after the fact, it is merely used stuff. Fifty years down the road, people don't remember, thus not worth as much. Thirty-five years after is probably in the sweet spot of what it's worth. People who were kids or young adults at the time this happened and saw it on TV would be most likely to have the Benjies for this stuff, and they would be most likely to pay the $$$. I don't blame Jim Craig one bit for trying to finance a good retirement and inheritance for his family.nondisclosed_email@example.com (bunnyman666)Fri, 07 Aug 2015 04:01:54 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275895,from=rss#post275895https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275895,from=rss#post275895To some extent his gear is time sensitive. People of his generation who watched the “miracle on ice” are at the point in their lives that they are earning their maximum and have the disposable income to purchase stuff like this for top dollar. Once his generation moves along into retirement it will be a long time before some of the stuff sells as antiques, long after Craig is gone I’d suspect. nondisclosed_email@example.com (jon math)Thu, 06 Aug 2015 13:08:03 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275894,from=rss#post275894https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275894,from=rss#post275894Looks like someone is shopping for buyers. The market is still hot so the timing practically compels these guys to put their stuff up for sale. If they let time go by, and pass on, the family will end up with the stuff and then what? If the family decides to sell the stuff down the line, it may be at a point in time when the market is not what it is now -AND- the buyers might not be willing to pay top price if they are not buying the items directly from the sports figure. I think it's obvious that the highest possible price is going to be achieved by dealing with a living sports figure directly, and especially at a point in time when it's still a peak seller's market. In any case it's fairly clear that for the most part, the guys are not that attached to their gear, those who are are holding on and that's that. nondisclosed_email@example.com (MONTREALER)Thu, 06 Aug 2015 08:23:02 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275893,from=rss#post275893https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275893,from=rss#post275893Your right Neums - I sure if there are no takers at those 'inflated' prices they would consider offers. And yes Jim will always have his memories which are the most important thing to have. nondisclosed_email@example.com (goalie21)Wed, 05 Aug 2015 09:00:54 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275892,from=rss#post275892https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275892,from=rss#post275892I don't think its an auction. There's an estimate of what each item is worth and then the price. I think it says the items are for sale at that price, first come first serve.nondisclosed_email@example.com (neums30)Wed, 05 Aug 2015 05:57:03 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275891,from=rss#post275891https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275891,from=rss#post275891Atter looking over the lot, some items I could see wanting, but others border on silly. Mr. Craig must have had people advising him on what other artifacts to keep (other than the obvious). I found it strange that his chest and arm protectors and catch glove are MIA, along with the socks. I definitely would have never thought to keep what clothes I wore for my medal presentation. Alas- I have never won an Olumpic medal, either. I tend to toss or donate too much, even though my basement looks like it would make the cut on the TV show "Hoarders" at the moment. Remember that the prices are probably set by the auction house and may not necessarily fetch what is estimated.nondisclosed_email@example.com (bunnyman666)Wed, 05 Aug 2015 04:07:20 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275890,from=rss#post275890https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275890,from=rss#post275890I read somewhere that Craig had two children. Obviously the gold medal is the most valuable and personal Olympic-related item he has - but he only has one and it can't be divided. However the cash it generates can be split between his kids and their respective families when he passes on. It makes sense. Apparently he is a charitable guy as well, so maybe he feels good about giving some of the money to charity. Stuff like that might mean more to him than retaining the medal. He still has the memories. The achievement itself probably means more than the mementoes (?)...mementos (?)...umm...keepsakes. It probably is the best time for him to auction it off. I read somewhere that Mickey Cochrane (hall of fame baseball catcher of the '20's & '30's) said something to the effect that the hall of fame was wonderful but it didn't pay anything and he still needed to eat after he stopped playing baseball. I don't think Craig is eating dogfood or anything but I think I understand why he is parting with the stuff.nondisclosed_email@example.com (HelmutHedd30)Tue, 04 Aug 2015 19:28:53 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275889,from=rss#post275889https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275889,from=rss#post275889@neums30- I get that, but so many people look at that as a way to make a buck; after all- we don't know the motivations for what makes one sell an Olympic medal or Stanley/Superbowl/World Series/NBA Championship ring, either. After all- it's yours: do what you wish with it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (bunnyman666)Tue, 04 Aug 2015 17:02:52 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275888,from=rss#post275888https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275888,from=rss#post275888I can understand selling the stuff except for the medal. Many times, sports stars didn't make the big bucks like people think they did during their playing days. I don't begrudge a fellow (or lady) selling their memorabilia, especially if it was what they actually used. I think back to a fellow who was a middle relief pitcher in the majors. He got a World Series ring, but I would wager 99/100 people would NOT know who he was by name. He walks around in anonymity. None the less, he sold his ring probably at the best time he could have and made a tidy sum (not like what Jim Craig is asking). Why did he sell it? Because he knew it was time to sell.nondisclosed_email@example.com (bunnyman666)Tue, 04 Aug 2015 10:27:19 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275886,from=rss#post275886https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275886,from=rss#post275886Interesting... Hopefully all these masks will be grouped and sent on traveling exhibitions so that the public can see them up close again.nondisclosed_email@example.com (MONTREALER)Fri, 31 Jul 2015 20:51:57 +0000 Re: Jim Craig selling memorabiliahttps://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275882,from=rss#post275882https://bvintagegoaliemaskdiscussionpage.runboard.com/p275882,from=rss#post275882It doesn't necessarily mean financial trouble. The value of the stuff will peak and decline at some point. His timing is probably good. It is easier to divide cash up than anything else. Craig probably wants to set his family up for generations. Makes sense to me. http://www.lelands.com/Sales The prices seem insane, but as a Canadian the 'Miracle on Ice' means very little to me. Not to diss the great accomplishment of Team USA but the Summit Series was the thing when it comes to international hockey imo. Craig's sweaters are priced as high as Paul Henderson's. Interesting to see how they go... O{* O{* O{* The mask is in the stratosphere O{* O{* O{* Check this link out. Thought he might hold onto it longer, or pass it down, or donate some to the HOF. Could fetch 5 million bucks! Your thoughts?...nondisclosed_email@example.com (corsetteowner)Fri, 31 Jul 2015 17:01:17 +0000
