Something to Ponder

Helmets became mandatory in 1952 for Formula One drivers, only 8 years before the goalie mask was invented. The helmets pretty quickly started getting painted, not unlike goalie masks did. Like goalie masks early paint jobs were simple, solid colors, team colors, country colors etc and more often than not a driver would wear the same helmet paint their entire carrier.

Also like goalie masks the airbrush paint job has become the norm. It is not out of the question to see a driver today wearing two or three different helmets on any given weekend, and never wearing that helmet’s paint again. The paint jobs today are as unique as a goalie mask is often displaying metal flaked, gold plated, portraits, fades etc. seldom having much to do with the team colors any more.

The ruling body of Formula One is considering rules that will ban a driver from changing their helmet’s colors once the season begins. The F1 higher ups feel that the fan base has problems identifying their favorite drivers (somehow I feel the real reason is money) but I do see their point. I miss the days of Dryden’s target, Balfour’s eagle, Favell’s starburst, leaf and mountains, Cheever’s stitches etc, you knew at a glance who was who. I wonder if such a rule should be applied to goalies as well?

Great post. I agree 100% I also miss the hand painted more simpler designs. I see the pens goalie seems to have a Herron type paintjob. The combo while adding (ahem) better protection has caused all masks to look the same. It is too bad the Liut/Harrison, the Higgins, the Homouth etc are traded for this generic contraption. Although the game, and goaltending in particular has gone generic also. All styles seem to have merged into one. With the players also.. I have a tough time getting through an entire hockey game these days.

I don’t mind the similar style of the mask. It is only natural that they have evolved to a point that they are state of the art as far as protectiveness and vision are concerned. To carry my car helmet analogy along there are only two or three approved ones of those as well.

The air brushed paint jobs are what I don’t like. More to the point I don’t like the complex paint jobs; how they are applied, be it with paint brush or a sponge or an airbrush is not the issue. If at 20 feet distance you cannot tell what is on the mask or helmet, how is a fan in the nose bleed seats going to tell what is on the mask? To each his own, but give me graphics not portraits!

Your seeing more and more guys using simpler paint designs or at least team logos on their masks compared to 5 to 10 years ago. It got carried away with the dragons and motorbikes. If I was a GM I would insist goalies mask have the team logo and colors on it vs his hobbies or favorite animal and movie. Thats for tatoos now
