Combo Mask Boredom...
I want to add my comments to expand on what Higginsmask1 had to say in another post that I agree with and think about alot when watching new hockey, since the era of the cookiecutter masks ie Combos and being that their all the same or very close to it has made watching hockey less fun for myself to watch. Gone are the days of different designs shapes personalies reflecting from the masks. I find it very sterile these days. Not just masks/goalies but also find all the players seem very close to each other in abilities and skating style etc etc, I guess it seems like there's less character and individual style than before. I hate to sound like an old man (at age 33) crying that things aren't like they used to be but oh well. I guess it just goes downhill from here eh?

Re: Combo Mask Boredom...
Combos are without a doubt a safer mask and at this point in time the pinnacle of mask evolution. That being said, I agree with you Brian, they do lack character. Combos, it seems to me, are a synbol of the game in general. It has evolved to the point of "boring-excellence" (nice oxymoron eh?). It's kind of like over produced Rock n' Roll,
The masks of today are beutiful in terms of materials, weight, art work etc. but the raw "Iggy Pop" like edge is missing.

Re: Combo Mask Boredom...
One of the biggest problems is not the combo mask itself, but the sponsorship agreements and endorsement deals that means a high percentage of high-level goalies in many leagues wear the same mask (Itech), with similar paint jobs. I find the Itech paint jobs lack creativeity and personalization, a lot of them look like stickers on the mask because the reproduce detailed logos so often. Another problem is team logos now are so detailed and corporate looking, and they get directly reproduced on the mask without any interpretation.
There have been some great, original combo masks that have really added to the fun of the game (Hayward's shark Armadilla, Shields' Cheevers tribute). Also, in the early days of the combo masks, there were a number of small makers who were still trying to find the best design, so there were some unique designs.
I liked the era when you would see a lot of personalization on masks, but it's all so sophisiticated now.

Re: Combo Mask Boredom...
I agree that the Itech corner on the market has taken something away from the look of the combo masks. I do like other masks out there like the Lefevbre made masks - Roys first to masks with the Canadians were great, also the Potvin mask by Harrison. Some of the very early combo masks are the best masks going... Fuhr, Moog, Hextal, Myre, Resch... J{*

Re: Combo Mask Boredom...
Seeing how it was my comment that spurred this, I'll jump in. Yes, the combo masks, (yes, they protect better, zzz) even the different companies are mind-numbingly dull and leave little for personalization. Brian, you are 33? OK, I'll be the old dude (49) and say yes, it was more interesting in my day. I loved all the different style masks, even back then.
I was sick when people started discarding cool masks for ugly, boring cages.
I'll have to disagree on the early combo's, though, I thought Tony O took an absolute mint-looking mask and trashed it up with the goofy helmet piece and nailed-on cage.

Re: Combo Mask Boredom...
Gary, keep the mask as is , frame it and hang it up next to the other masks. it can be the maskman evolution from beginner to master vintage mask maker... do you mind showing us a picture of your first creation? H{$

Re: Combo Mask Boredom...
Yes, when the masks started being replaced by cages, the goalies seemed to lose some of their uniqueness.
I think the first goalie I recall with a cage was Tretiak (sp?). I'm not sure if I ever saw a Soviet goalie with a mask (I was born in '68). Did Tretiak ever wear a mask?
