Pretzel question
Hi this is my first post. I've been a goalkeeper for 30 years and just missed the great vintage mask era. However, like you folks I too have been facinated and intrigued by them and recently started making replicas my self.
In making my first pretzel mask I've used 1/2" fiberglass rope with isophthalic polyester tooling resin. Does anyone have experience in using fiberglass rope ? Specifically do you totally submerse rope in resin to ensure complete wet out ? You probably guessed what happened in my effort... a soft pretzel. I soaked it pretty good (apparently not good enough) then when placed on plug spaped and added resin with brush hoping it would penetrate thru. guess i was trying to save resin too much.
also in rope crossover areas (lumps) as in Dunc Wilson mask, was or is there any technique used to ensure a good bond between the two.
Any of your thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Pretzel question
I've tried to use rope to make that kind of mask and it didn't work. The rope looked fat and fluffy at first, but as soon as it was soaked in resin it became very thin. Can't say exactly how those masks were made, it is presumed that the fiberglass rope or yarn that was used back in the day is not easily available now.

Re: Pretzel question
Gary made me a custom pretzel about 6-7 years ago that came out very nice. I had him paint it light brown such that would have the appearance of leather. I'll tryn post a picture of it. When the paint chipped a bit I noticed a red color underneath. I'm pretty sure it's not fiberglass rope as it seemed very formable / smooth, (not sure about pre preg matls).
Gary, if your out there ?, is there any chance you could enlighten us on the matl you used to make this pretzel ? I'm Greg Bray from Rochester, NY and I believe it was around 2002.
I also am working on a Don Simmon's Pretzel using fiberglass rope. The first attempt captured the shape and layering pretty good from what i could see in pictures. However I used 1/2" rope and the bars look too bulky. I'm going to purchase some 3/8" rope and try again. The other problem as you mentioned Montrealer is the rough texture, (i'll tryn post pic of my prototype as well ). Do you feel that a gel coat atop the rope could aid in a smoother surface ?, Any suggestion on mfr /product id ? or if I was to sand the rope for smoother appearance, my fear is that this will only expose more/ newer cavities.
On a side note McMaster Carr sent me free samples of different fiberglass ropes some up to 10 ft in length, which I though was very generous). I have thoughts on using 1/8" rope to form ridges on a fibrosport 3/4 forhead. Rope would be used between/ just before the last few layers of cloth, leaving the inside forhead smooth, any thoughts on that ?
Thanks for your reponces so far...

I understand they either use frozen caramel or a solidified caramel (hardener) that softens shortly once inside the chocolate.
Ask Gary also who shot Kennedy.

Re: Pretzel question
gerg -
what I really think is that braided rope was not used back in the day, so it will be a lot of work to smooth all that out if you use that stuff to make your masks.
You'll probably get closer to your answer once you abandon the notion of using braided fiberglass rope and use a material that is smoother from the beginning.
