Re: Skorodenski Skull Mask Info

30 years ago there were mask painters.

a simple design like Skoros "connect the dots" design was probally done by a trainer.

masks like Gratton Lion,Bromley Skull,Meloche Barons, etc were done by an "artist".

big difference.

All those masks you mentioned were made and painted by the same guy, Greg Harrison. He was a mask maker who painted some of his masks. He wasn't a mask painter. I doubt he painted many, if any, other maker's masks. Somebody specializing in goalie mask painting 30 years ago would have starved because hardly anyone was making masks or even wearing them back then. I painted a few of the masks I made for pros back then and even painted one of Bunny Larocque's masks, but I never considered myself a "mask painter".

call him what you want but Harrison was a mask maker, mask painter and an artist.

you cant tell me the majority of all the colorful masks from the late 70s early 80s were painted by trainers or the goalies themselves.

there were artists/painters back then, they just didnt "specialize" in masks like they do today.

Chico Resch, for instance had his first Isles mask painted by a student...she wasnt known as a "mask painter" it was just a project she did.

Didn't Harrison paint the following?

Bromley Scull, Simmons Cobra, Meloche Barons (both of them), Gratton Lion mask, Bannerman, Ridley Canucks, Belanger, FLames mask, Inness Caps, Stephenson Caps.. to name a few.

Would that not make him the most influential mask painter in History and both solid mask maker and mask painter?

Did Harrison charge extra for the paint work or was it "thrown in" without an additional fee?

I know he surprised Rutherford with the Wings over the eyes, but I wonder how many goalies sought out and paid for the extra "flair".

No doubt Harrison was a master at his extremely unique, under appreciated, non-lucrative medium.

You are all completely missing my point. Lindbergh was mocking Skoro's paint job and I pointed out that in the old days you couldn't send your mask out to a Ray Bishop or a Marlene Ross. People in the business of painting goalie masks just didn't exist. You either did it yourself, or had somebody with some artistic ability do it for you. And yes, if you bought a mask from Harrison he could paint it for you and do a quite good job. I have also seen quite a few Harrison masks back in the old days that were not painted by him but by the goal tender. And yes, Harrison did charge extra for artwork, a lot extra.

Yes I understand and understood your point Neums. As for putting him in the HOF, The problem I have with putting him in the HOF would be 3 of my friends paid for masks and did not get their masks. Thousands of dollars. That sort of equates to taking away the order of Canada in my books. It is very unfortunate.

Re: Skorodenski Skull Mask Info

I sent Harrison my mask in April 1990 to have it resprayed. He quoted me $200 and a two week turn around, claiming he wasn't busy and there was a window of opportunity to get it done. I paid up front at Greg's request.

May turned into June and come September still no sign of my mask. I had been phoning him on a weekly basis but by mid summer he had begun to screen his calls. No longer was I working within fifteen minutes of his shop, was now a five hour drive away.

Out of desperation I had my lawyer draft a letter outlining the legal steps I was prepared to take in order to regain possession of my mask. Then I went out and bought a Cooper SK600 helmet and HM30 cage.

Harrison simply ignored my registered letter. In June 1991 I got hold of his home phone number and called very early one morning. He acted indignant that I would contact him at his house and got real upset when I called him a liar and thief. I said that I would be in his shop at 8am the next day with a rather large friend to retrieve my mask.

The goon accompaniment was a ruse but I did show up at Greg's door as promised. It was apparent that he had pulled an all nighter but there was my mask freshly painted but without its foam padding. While I watched he cut and attached the inner padding, straps and backplate, screwed on a fresh cage and cautioned me to take care as the finish had not yet cured. He handed me a heavy duty vinyl mask bag which he said was compensation for taking so long to complete the respray. Very few words had been spoken as I waited the hour or so it took Harrison to assemble my mask.

Throughout the five hour drive home I continually gazed at my liberated mask sitting in a cardboard box on the seat beside me. Why had this man put me through fourteen months of anxiety? It was the last time I saw Greg.

Later on I recalled how much different his shop looked in June 1991 compared to my previous visits. There was no evidence of raw materials stacked all over, no rolls of wire by the cage jig, in fact, very few masks to be seen. There was some talk later that he was robbing Peter to pay Paul, scavenging parts from inbound masks and attaching them to "completed" ones being shipped out. Whatever was going on there I was relieved to have rescued mine.
