Who owns the rights to Fibrosport?
I read on Don Scott's page that he aquired the trademark. Does that mean Don Scott now owns fibrosport? If so what a cool line to own. Fibrosport shirts now THAT I would like...!

Re: Who owns the rights to Fibrosport?
Not altogether convinced of this. As Fibrosport became Fibretek and now make cab tops for pick up trucks. In terms of the name well there is /was only one Fibrosport

Re: Who owns the rights to Fibrosport?
The whole topic of trademark rights is difficult to figure out. But if the trademark has lapsed, and he conducts business under that name uncontested, he may have the rights in time. Also if he got a trademark lawyer to register the name and it was available. But I'm not an expert so if there are any trademark lawyers here please chime in.

Oh, I'm sure he somehow legaly owns the right to the name ...but "what's in a name" - (English teacher in me) when i read that Don was doing this i felt it was kind of an audacious blasphemy. This was JACQUES PLANTE'S factory ....sacred ground for me.

Re: Who owns the rights to Fibrosport?
Got it. But this kind of thing happens all the time in many industries, and it can be done properly if the new owner cares.
I know in the guitar business (also sacred territory for many), some companies buy a name and slap it on some cheap $99 guitar. Others do it right, doing the right things to ressurect a brand and bringing back to the high stature it deserves, building product to a very high standard, sometimes bringing back ex-employees as consultants, etc. In a lot of cases it's better than a dead brand. Not that I think this will happen in the case of Fibrosport.

Yea you're right and in many respects Don's product is even better than the old Fibro's but....
To me there is something really special about those old masks, any old mask for that matter

Re: Who owns the rights to Fibrosport?
Lawyer here. Buying or otherwise acquiring the name or the trademark of a company doesnt mean the purchaser owns the business itself. In this instance, the purchaser could put "Fibrosport" on shoe laces or whatever product he or she wishes. The trademark or name is like any other asset of a company; it is just one asset. Whomever owns the production facilities, the masks specs, etc would have to sell them under a different name. I would expect that there would be a legal battle if the purchaser of only the name/trademark "Fibrosport" tried to sell masks. The business formerly known as Fibrosport would still have the rights to manufacture and sell its product; ie, the masks we associate with Jacques Plante. Bottom line: it depends on what the current owner of "Fibrosport" bought or acquired when it took ownership of the name/trademark.

Re: Who owns the rights to Fibrosport?
Back In 2007, I began the process to acquire the Fibrosport Trademark, including the logo with Plante's autograph etc.
My application was ultimately denied on different grounds. If for nothing else, I would have liked to own it so as to preserve it as it was originally:
i.e. It would have prevented someone with larger means to take the name and possibly bastardize it by doing what the 21st Century does so well to everything and anything without any regard to tradition and the like ... FiBroSporT 2.0 etc etc.
